What is GNWL in train ticket?

GNWL stands for General Waitlist. It is the waitlist assigned when you book under the General (GN) quota from or to the originating/terminating station. GNWL has the best clearance rate among all waitlist types because it draws from the largest seat pool.

What is CKWL and does it confirm?

CKWL is the waitlist for Tatkal (CK) quota. It rarely clears because Tatkal passengers almost never cancel — especially confirmed Tatkal tickets have no refund on cancellation, so passengers have little incentive to cancel.

Can I book Tatkal quota online?

Yes. Tatkal quota can be booked online on IRCTC. AC class Tatkal opens at 10 AM and Non-AC (Sleeper) Tatkal opens at 11 AM, one day before the date of journey.

What is the difference between Tatkal and Premium Tatkal?

Tatkal (CK) is a fixed premium surcharge on top of base fare and allows waitlisting (CKWL). Premium Tatkal (PT) uses dynamic surge pricing — no waitlist, only confirmed seats are available, and fares can be 2–3x the base fare during peak demand.

When is HO quota released to public?

HO (Head Office) quota is typically released to the public 3 days before the journey date if unused by Railway administration. It appears on IRCTC as HO quota seats when available.

RSWL stands for Roadside Waitlist, which is the waitlist for Station Quota (SS). It has very poor clearance because station quota seats are limited (4–8 per train) and can only be booked at the station counter.
