How Indian Railways Waitlist Works

When you book a waitlisted (WL) ticket on IRCTC, your position improves as confirmed passengers cancel. The chart is prepared approximately 4 hours before the train's scheduled departure. Any WL ticket that is not confirmed at chart time is automatically cancelled with a full refund.

What Affects My Waitlist Chances?

  • Quota type: General (GN) quota has the most movement. Tatkal (CK/TQ) rarely cancels.
  • Train class: Sleeper has far more seats than AC classes, so movement is faster.
  • Season: Peak season travel (Oct–Nov, Christmas, Holi etc.) has fewer cancellations.
  • Days to departure: More time → more chances for others to cancel.
  • WL number: Lower WL numbers confirm first. WL above 50 in AC is very risky.

⚠️ This tool provides estimates based on general patterns. Actual confirmation depends on real cancellations and is not guaranteed. Always verify your PNR status on NTES or IRCTC before travel.
