How IRCTC Ticket Cancellation Works

The earlier you cancel an Indian Railways train ticket, the more refund you receive. As per the new rules effective 1 April 2026, IRCTC deducts a flat cancellation charge or a percentage of the ticket fare, whichever is higher, depending on the time of cancellation relative to the train's scheduled departure.

  • Cancelling more than 72 hours before departure: flat charge of ₹120–₹240 (class-dependent).
  • 72–24 hours before: 25% of fare is deducted (minimum ₹240).
  • 24–8 hours before: 50% of fare is deducted (minimum ₹240).
  • Less than 8 hours before departure: No refund for most tickets.
  • Confirmed Tatkal tickets: No refund on cancellation.

FAQs About Train Ticket Refund

How much refund do I get if I cancel a train ticket?

The refund depends on when you cancel. As per revised rules from 1 April 2026: Cancelling more than 72 hours before departure gives the highest refund (only a flat fee is deducted). Cancelling 24–72 hours before means 25% is deducted. 8–24 hours means 50% deduction. Less than 8 hours — no refund.

Can I get a refund on a confirmed Tatkal ticket?

No. IRCTC does not provide a refund for confirmed Tatkal tickets if cancelled voluntarily. However, if the train is cancelled by Indian Railways, a full refund is issued regardless of ticket type.

What happens to my WL ticket refund if it's not confirmed?

Waiting List (WL) tickets that are not confirmed at the time of chart preparation receive an automatic full refund from IRCTC. No cancellation request is needed for online WL tickets.
