How many days in advance can I book a train ticket in India?

You can book an IRCTC train ticket up to 60 days before your journey date (excluding the journey day). This is called the Advance Reservation Period (ARP). Booking opens at 8:00 AM IST on the ARP opening date.

General IRCTC train ticket booking opens at 8:00 AM IST on the ARP date (60 days before your journey). The IRCTC website and app allows booking 24/7 after the window opens.

Question 3

What time does Tatkal booking start on IRCTC?

Accepted Answer

Tatkal booking opens at 10:00 AM IST for AC classes (1A, 2A, 3A, CC) and 11:00 AM IST for Non-AC classes (SL, 2S), one day before the journey date.

What are the IRCTC train ticket cancellation charges?

As per revised rules from 1 April 2026: More than 72 hours before departure — flat charge by class (₹60–₹240 + GST for AC). 72–24 hours before — 25% of fare. 24–8 hours before — 50% of fare. Less than 8 hours — no refund. Tatkal tickets are generally non-refundable.

What is TDR and when should I file it?

TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) is a refund application for e-tickets when normal online cancellation is not possible — for example when the train is late by 3+ hours or has not reached the destination. File TDR through the IRCTC app/website within the specified time limits.

Question 6

What is the difference between journey date and booking date?

Accepted Answer

Journey date is the date you actually travel. Booking date (or ARP date) is when IRCTC opens reservations for that journey. To find your booking date, subtract 60 days from your journey date, or use the RailWise booking date calculator.
