Waiting List Explained

Confused by WL, GNWL, PQWL, RLWL? This guide explains all waiting list types in Indian Railways and what your chances are of getting confirmed.

What is a Waiting List Ticket?

When all confirmed berths in a train are sold, new bookings are placed in the Waiting List (WL). As confirmed passengers cancel their tickets, WL passengers move up and may get confirmed berths.

✅ You can board the train only with a Confirmed or RAC ticket. A WL ticket does not allow boarding.

Types of Waiting Lists

GNWL

General Waiting List

Allotted when booking from the origin station or early stations. This has the best chances of confirmation as it covers cancelled tickets from the full journey.

Confirmation chance: High
PQWL

Pooled Quota Waiting List

Allotted for intermediate stations that share a pooled quota. Passengers travelling between non-origin/non-terminating stations. Harder to confirm.

Confirmation chance: Medium
RLWL

Remote Location Waiting List

Allotted for specific remote/secondary stations that have a limited quota. Only move up within the same boarding-destination pair.

Confirmation chance: Medium-Low
TQWL

Tatkal Quota Waiting List

Waiting list within the Tatkal quota. Generally very hard to confirm as Tatkal quota is small. Usually means no boarding allowed.

Confirmation chance: Very Low
RSWL

Roadside Station Waiting List

Allotted to passengers boarding from small roadside stations with minimal quota. Very limited movement.

Confirmation chance: Low

What is RAC?

RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) is a special status where two passengers share one berth (side lower berth). RAC passengers can board the train and are given a seat. If a confirmed passenger cancels, RAC passengers get full berths.
